Abstract

This skripsi aimed to find out the effectiveness of using fishbowl strategy in teaching speaking at the eleventh grade of MAN 1 Palu and to find the students‟ response in learning speaking by using fishbowl strategy. This research used quasi experimental design. The population of this research were the eleventh grade students of MAN 1 Palu academic year 2019/2020. In determining the sample, the researcher used purposive sampling and consist of 21 students. The instrument used in collecting the data was speaking test, that consisted of pre-test and post test. The findings of the reseach show that the fishbowl strategy is effective in improving students‟ skill in speaking. It could seen from the significant difference between the students‟ mean score in pretest and posttest. In pretest experimental group, the students‟ mean score was 62,286 and the students‟ score in postest was 80,952. In posttest control group, the students‟ mean score was 62,8 and the students‟ score in posttest was 70,4. The alternative hypothesis of this research would be accepted if the t-test is higher than the t-table. While, if the t-test is smaller than the t-table the alternative hypothesis would be rejected. The result of the data analysis t-test was 3,459 higher than the t-table value 2.02269. Based on the result, the Ha was accepted. In other words, the use of fishbowl strategy was effective to improve the students speaking ability. Furthermore, the students had positive responses to the use of fishbowl strategy in learning speaking. It could be infered by looking their responses on the statements in speaking test.
